The Nakizumo Crying Baby Festival (泣き相撲) is a uniquely Japanese tradition held at Sensoji in Asakusa to pray for the healthy growth of infants. In this spirited match, sumo wrestlers hold one-year-old babies aloft while a referee encourages them to cry. The ritual follows the proverb “crying babies grow fast,” as it is believed a loud wail fends off evil spirits and ensures a robust future. Usually, the first to cry—or the one who cries the loudest—is declared the winner. While startling to some, it remains a cherished celebratory event for local families.

Two competition sessions are held, typically beginning around 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, located in the open plaza directly behind the main temple building. For parents wishing to have their children participate, advance registration is required and usually involves a fee of approximately ¥15,000, which includes a protective amulet and a small commemorative gift. Because the festival is a major draw for both domestic and international media, the public viewing areas around the dohyo become densely packed very early.
