The tour begins at the Marine House reception

Sapporo Breweries, the producer of the world-renowned Sapporo Black Label, operates three major facilities that welcome the public: Hokkaido, Oita, and Chiba. Among these, the Sapporo Breweries Chiba Beer Factory is the most significant in terms of sheer scale and daily output. Located on the industrial coastline of Tokyo Bay, it serves as the primary supply hub for the Kanto region. Given its proximity to the capital, it has become one of the most popular afternoon excursions for those looking to combine industrial education with a world-class tasting experience.

From Raw Barley to the Mash Tank

The guided tour begins with a sensory introduction to the fundamental ingredients: high-quality barley and aromatic hops. Visitors are given a brief overview of the brand’s history, which traces its roots back to 1876, making it the oldest beer brand in Japan. One of the more impressive sights in the early stage of the tour is the collection of massive mash tanks. Here, the starches in crushed grains are converted into fermentable sugars. Interestingly, during this phase, the mixture is entirely non-alcoholic and possesses a flavor profile strikingly similar to a very sweet, warm mugicha (barley tea).

As the tour progresses through the Fermentation Simulation Tank, a short film illustrates the invisible science behind carbonation and aging. However, the true climax of the visit is the tasting session held at the factory bar. For a small entry fee, guests are treated to two full glasses of “Sapporo Perfect.” This specific sub-brand is rarely found in standard Tokyo izakayas; it is characterized by its exceptionally fine foam and a temperature-controlled pour that maximizes the crispness of the lager. The quality of the beer is undeniably superior at the source, served in meticulously cleaned glassware that emphasizes the clarity of the brew.

Exhibitions and the Beer Garden

Following the tasting, visitors can wander through a historical exhibition that showcases the evolution of Sapporo’s branding. The display features vintage glass bottles and cans dating back to 1959, documenting the aesthetic shift of Japan’s beer culture over the decades. For those who wish to extend their stay, the bar offers additional pours at significantly reduced rates. Because the parent company also owns the premium Yebisu brand, visitors often have the chance to sample Yebisu Perfect, another elusive label. As a final souvenir, each guest is gifted a 500ml glass unique to the Chiba facility.

To round out the experience, many visitors choose to dine at the Chiba Beer Garden, a spacious restaurant located on the factory grounds. The menu focuses on Genghis Khan—a Hokkaido-style grilled lamb dish that is a traditional accompaniment to cold beer. The combination of grilled meats and brewery-fresh lager, enjoyed with a view of the ships moving across the bay, makes the Sapporo Breweries Chiba Beer Factory one of the best value-for-money day trips in the greater metropolitan area.
