The Omiya Bonsai Festival (大宮盆栽まつり) is a world-renowned event held annually in the historic Omiya Bonsai Village during the Golden Week holidays. While the village is a tranquil destination year-round, it transforms into a vibrant open-air market and gallery every May. The festival’s hallmark is the “Meihin” (masterpiece) exhibition, where the village’s six prestigious private gardens display their most prized specimens, some of which are centuries old. Alongside these professional displays, local amateurs showcase their technical mastery, creating a comprehensive look at the evolution of this living art form.

The festival’s energy centers on the “Bonsai Market,” where the usually quiet residential streets are lined with hundreds of stalls. Here, enthusiasts can purchase everything from affordable starter plants to high-end technical tools and professional-grade soils. Because the village nurseries are world leaders in the craft, the festival offers a unique opportunity to acquire assets directly from the source. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of high-level artistry and community celebration, making it an essential visit for anyone interested in the technical precision of Japanese horticulture.

Getting There

The village is most easily reached via Toro Station on the JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line (approx. 35 minutes from Shinjuku), which is a 10-minute walk from the festival’s northern entrance. Alternatively, Omiyakoen Station on the Tobu Urban Park Line provides direct access to the southern end of the village. During the peak of the festival, the walk between the two stations effectively becomes the main festival thoroughfare. For photographers, the early morning light offers the best chance to capture the intricate textures of the trees before the midday crowds arrive.
