The Lantern Festival is a major seasonal event in Nagasaki to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Originally established by the local Chinese community, the festival was expanded in 1994 and now features over 15,000 ornate lanterns that illuminate the urban landscape. During the 15-day celebration, the city hosts various cultural performances, including lion and dragon dances, traditional music, and elaborate parades, centering on the historic district and surrounding public spaces. The lanterns are illuminated daily from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, creating a vivid nocturnal backdrop across historic stone bridges and local shopping arcades.

Lanterns are hung in various areas, including the city’s historic stone bridges.

For visitors, the best viewing experience occurs during the “blue hour” just after sunset, when the ambient light complements the glow of the lanterns for photography. As the city is coastal, evening temperatures can drop significantly due to sea breezes; wearing windproof layers is essential for comfort. Utilizing the local tram system is the most efficient way to navigate between the various display sites, as many central roads are closed to vehicular traffic during the festival.
