The Chiyoda Lantern Floating Evening (納涼の夕べ, Noryo no Yube) is a serene summer highlight held in late July at the Chidorigafuchi Moat. For two nights, over 2,000 lanterns—each inscribed with personal wishes and prayers for peace—are released to drift across the water of the Imperial Palace. Visitors can appreciate the shimmering reflections from the paved greenway for free or apply for the chance to row a boat among the lights. Due to high demand, boat participation is limited to 80 groups per night and decided via a lottery in late June. A boat reservation costs ¥10,000, which includes three lanterns and allows up to three passengers to board for the one-hour experience.

Application for the boat lottery and advance lantern purchases must be made through the official Chiyoda City Tourism website. While the boat lottery closes early, those visiting on the day can still participate by purchasing a lantern (¥2,000 each) to be released from the pier by staff or writing messages at the temporary booths near the boathouse. Spectators should arrive at the Chidorigafuchi Greenway by 6:30 PM to secure a viewing spot before the 7:00 PM lighting, as the narrow paths near Kudanshita Station become heavily congested once the sun sets. The event concludes at 8:00 PM, followed by a phased exit to manage the large crowds.
