Directions to the museums in Ueno Park

Tokyo has hundreds of museums and art galleries. Many of the most famous such as the Tokyo National Museum and the National Museum of Western Art are located in Ueno Park, but there are many more spread throughout the city. Entrance fees for museums are typically ¥600-800 and ¥1,000-1,500 for art galleries, with discounts for children and senior citizens.

If you plan on visiting several museums in Tokyo, then you should consider the Grutto Pass which gives you discounted entry to around 100 facilities throughout the capital. Note that most museums close on Mondays (unless it is a public holiday), and during the end year and New Year holidays.

National Museum of Western Art

Nezu Museum

Museum displaying Japanese and East Asian antique art from the collection of its founder, Nezu Kaichiro. One of the main attractions is the Japanese garden with its stone-paved paths and tea house.

Old Shimbashi Station Museum

Museum that is a reconstruction of the Shimbashi-Teishajo Station that was the terminus between Shimbashi and Yokohama. Constructed in 1872, this was Japan’s first railway line and a key milestone in the country’s road to modernization.

SCAI The Bathhouse

A contemporary art gallery open in 1993 which is housed inside a former bathhouse and building that is over 200 years old. The gallery is known for introducing Japan’s avant-garde artists to the world as well as for helping foreign artists establish a presence in Japan.

Samurai Museum

Museum in Kabukicho with displays of the swords, matchlock guns, and armor used by the samurai over the different periods of Japanese history. You can also dress in samurai attire and have your photograph taken.
