Hikarie

Completed in 2012, Shibuya Hikarie is a 34-story skyscraper that marked the first major step in the massive multi-year redevelopment of the Shibuya district. Standing prominently on the eastern side of the station, the complex was designed to offer a more sophisticated “lull” compared to the high-energy neon of the Hachiko side. While it functions as a vertical hub for corporate offices and commuters, its lower levels are dedicated to high-end retail and cultural experiences, anchored by the ShinQs department store which spans from the third basement level to the fifth floor.

The interior of Hikarie is meticulously curated to cater to a refined urban audience. The basement levels feature an expansive food hall (depachika) stocked with artisanal pastries, international delicacies, and premium bento boxes, while the upper fashion floors focus on emerging Japanese designers and boutique cosmetics. Beyond retail, the building is a significant cultural landmark; the 8th floor is home to “8/,” a creative space featuring art galleries and a unique design museum. Higher up, between the 11th and 16th floors, sits the Tokyu Theatre Orb—one of Tokyo’s largest musical theatres—which primarily hosts major Western Broadway and West End productions.
