The Bunkyo Chrysanthemum Festival, or Kiku Matsuri, is held annually at Yushima Tenmangu Shrine. As one of the district’s five major flower festivals, it features approximately 2,000 plants, including the renowned kiku-ningyo (dolls meticulously dressed in living flowers). The exhibition showcases traditional cultivation mastery, highlighted by ozukuri arrangements where a single plant is trained to produce hundreds of simultaneous blooms. The festival is open daily from 6:00 AM until sunset; however, visitors should note there are no evening illuminations.
For the best viewing experience, arrive early in the day to observe the intricate floral details in natural light. As the shrine is dedicated to the patron deity of learning, the grounds are particularly popular with students, leading to increased congestion during the afternoon. Entry to the precinct is free, making it an accessible cultural destination within the Bunkyo area.
