Utsunomiya is Japan’s “Gyoza Capital,” and the Utsunomiya Gyoza Festival (宇都宮餃子祭り) is the city’s premier culinary celebration. Held annually during the first weekend of November since 1999, the event brings together over 30 leading vendors from the Utsunomiya Gyoza Association at the Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park. Visitors can sample diverse dumpling styles—fried, steamed, and boiled—at highly discounted prices. The festival features live stage entertainment and mascot appearances, creating a vibrant atmosphere dedicated to the city’s signature soul food. It remains a major destination for culinary tourists seeking authentic regional flavors.
The festival typically operates from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM over the two-day weekend. Each stall serves a specific variety of gyoza, allowing visitors to compare different wrapper thicknesses and fillings from the city’s most famous specialized restaurants. In addition to the food, the event includes a “Gyoza Sculpture” photo spot and appearances by the city’s mascot, Tsutsumun. Official festival merchandise and frozen gyoza packs are also available for purchase, allowing attendees to take a taste of the festival home.
Getting there
Utsunomiya is approximately 50 minutes from Tokyo via the JR Tohoku Shinkansen or 100 minutes via the JR Utsunomiya Line. The festival is held at Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park (Utsunomiya Joshi Koen), located about 15 minutes on foot from the West Exit of Utsunomiya Station. During the festival weekend, dedicated shuttle buses often provide transit between the station and the park to manage the increased volume of visitors. The venue is also accessible via local city buses heading toward the City Hall (Shiyakusho) stop.
