International Museum Day has been held every 18 May since 1977 in a bid to raise awareness of museums and their important role in society. Today over 30,000 museums in 120 countries take part in the day, organising activities and tours and waiving entrance fees for the day. In Tokyo, several of the capital’s museums take part letting visitors into permanent exhibitions for free.
