The Tokugawa shogunate’s 100 member gun squad are well-known in historical circles, and they are the reason that the district around Shin-Okubo Station—where they were based—is called Hyakunicho (“100 person town”). On odd years this gun squad is remembered at the Edo Bakumatsu Hundred Member Gun Squad Ceremony where volunteers dressed in Edo period attire fire volleys off at various locations around the district, starting from 9:40am at Kaichu Inari Shrine near the station.
