Chinese New Year is known as the Spring Festival in China, and the celebrations in Yokohama are the biggest in Japan. The two-week festival kicks off with a countdown party the night before, followed by a Lion Dance and traditional performances in Yamashita-cho Park (the small park in Chinatown; not the waterfront Yamashita Park). A celebration parade and a lantern festival takes places the following weekend. While festivities do last for two weeks, it’s best to visit on the weekends when the crowds and events give a true sense of the scale of the celebrations.
Event details are taken from official sources whenever possible. It is always prudent to check the official event website before attending to make sure that there have not been any changes. If you know of an error in the calendar, then please let us know through the contact form.
