Chinese New Year is known as the Spring Festival in China, and the celebrations in Yokohama are the biggest in Japan. The two-week festival kicks off with a countdown party the night before, followed by a Lion Dance and traditional performances in Yamashita-cho Park (the small park in Chinatown; not the waterfront Yamashita Park). A celebration parade and a lantern festival takes places the following weekend. While festivities do last for two weeks, it’s best to visit on the weekends when the crowds and events give a true sense of the scale of the celebrations.
