The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (原美術館) was long celebrated as a pioneer of the private art scene in Japan. Established in 1979 in a stunning 1930s Bauhaus-style residence in Shinagawa, it was one of the first institutions in the country dedicated to international contemporary art. However, due to the aging of the historic structure, the Tokyo location officially closed its doors in 2021. The museum’s extensive collection and cultural mission have since been consolidated at its sister site, Hara Museum ARC, located in the scenic highlands of Gunma Prefecture.
The permanent collection remains a formidable testament to post-1950s creativity, featuring over 800 works by global icons such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Yayoi Kusama, and Ai Weiwei. While the intimate courtyard of the original Tokyo site is missed, the Hara Museum ARC offers a much larger, open-air “lull” designed by the world-renowned architect Arata Isozaki. Here, the bold black wooden structures house the museum’s modern masterpieces alongside the Hara Rokuro Collection of traditional East Asian art. The legacy of the original Tokyo venue lives on through rotating exhibitions and the popular Café d’Art, which continues to serve its signature “Image Cake” inspired by current displays, now set against the backdrop of the Gunma mountains.
