Tsukiji Honganji Temple hosts a famous bon odori (築地本願寺納涼盆踊り大会) for four days each summer. The temple’s spacious grounds provide a grand arena for dancing around the central yagura tower, accompanied by traditional taiko drumming. Self-proclaimed as “Japan’s Most Delicious Bon Odori,” the festival’s primary draw is the array of food stalls operated by legendary vendors from the nearby Tsukiji Outer Market. It offers a unique opportunity to enjoy high-end local delicacies while participating in a spirited and historic summer tradition.

The festival typically runs from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on weekdays and Sundays, with an earlier session from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM on Saturday. The food stalls are the major attraction, featuring iconic Tsukiji items like tamagoyaki and specialized bento from the market’s most famous retailers. Spectators can freely join the large dance circles surrounding the yagura, where various regional bon odori styles are performed throughout the night. The combination of the temple’s unique Indian-inspired architecture and the festive summer lights provides a distinct backdrop for this major metropolitan cultural event.
