Located directly across the street from the iconic Kaminarimon Gate, the Asakusa Culture and Tourism Center is far more than a simple information kiosk. Designed by the world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the building is a vertical masterpiece consisting of seven “stacked” traditional wooden houses, creating a striking aesthetic that bridges Asakusa’s Edo-period roots with modern Japanese design. For any traveler, this should be the first stop before diving into the crowded alleys of the temple district, as it offers the essential maps and multilingual resources needed to navigate the wider Taito Ward, including Ueno and Yanesen.

A Perspective Above the Crowd

The highlight of the center is undoubtedly the eighth-floor observation deck. While many of Tokyo’s viewpoints are located behind glass, this open-air terrace provides a superb, unobstructed view of Nakamise-dori stretching toward the main hall of Senso-ji Temple. From this height, the symmetrical lines of the temple roofs and the colorful stalls of the shopping street create a perfect photographic composition. Looking East, visitors are also treated to a clear view of the Tokyo Skytree and the Asahi Beer Headquarters across the Sumida River.

Inside, the facility is designed for maximum traveler utility. The ground floor features a comprehensive information desk with staff fluent in multiple languages, currency exchange machines, and a wide array of high-quality tourist maps. Upper floors house exhibition spaces detailing the history of the local festivals (matsuri), as well as a quiet cafe, nursing rooms, and clean public restrooms. With free high-speed WiFi available throughout the building, it serves as an ideal “base camp” to regroup and plan the next leg of your journey through northern Tokyo.

Yokohama Landmark Tower

Standing almost 300m tall, the Landmark Tower provides the best night view of the harbor area. You can also make the boast of having ridden the fastest elevator in Japan (it takes just 40 seconds to arrive at the observation deck on the 69th floor). The Yokohama Plaza on the first five floors of the building contains restaurants and shops.

Farm half way up Mount Nishi where Hachijo cows graze. Would be an unremarkable tourist spot were it not for the observation deck which provides one of the best views of the island. Admission is free.
