Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

KanagawaYokohama

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse (横浜赤レンガ倉庫) is a stunning example of industrial-chic preservation, standing as a weathered but proud reminder of the city’s maritime past. Originally constructed in the late Meiji and early Taisho eras, these two massive structures served as the primary customs warehouses for Yokohama Port. After surviving the Great Kanto Earthquake and decades of heavy use, they were retired in 1989. However, rather than facing the wrecking ball, they underwent an extensive five-year renovation before re-opening in 2002 as a vibrant cultural and commercial hub.

Today, the warehouses are divided into two distinct experiences. Warehouse 1 serves primarily as a cultural space, hosting art galleries and film festivals, while Warehouse 2 is a treasure trove for shoppers and foodies. Inside, you’ll find narrow, atmospheric corridors lined with small boutiques, independent craft shops selling everything from handmade leather goods to “Red Brick” themed jewelry, and a variety of trendy cafes. Whether you’re grabbing a world-famous breakfast at bills or listening to live sets at Motion Blue Yokohama, the interior manages to feel intimate despite the vast scale of the original brickwork.

The true heart of the complex is the expansive open-air plaza that connects the two buildings. This space is the city’s premier event venue, hosting everything from a massive German-style Oktoberfest and a magical Christmas Market to an outdoor ice skating rink in the winter. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the glittering Minato Mirai skyline on the other, it remains one of the most romantic and photogenic spots in Kanagawa.
