Osanbashi Pier & Passenger Terminal

Osanbashi Pier & Passenger Terminal

KanagawaYokohama

Osanbashi Pier (大さん橋) is much more than a functional transit hub; it is a masterpiece of modern architecture and arguably the most unique vantage point in Yokohama. Originally constructed in the late 19th century to facilitate the heavy flow of international trade, the pier was completely reimagined for the new millennium. The result is a striking, undulating terminal designed to resemble a “Whale’s Back.” Built using complex geometric folds and natural Brazilian ipê wood, the structure lacks traditional stairs or pillars, creating a seamless, organic landscape that feels more like a floating urban park than a cruise terminal.

While the lower levels house sleek boarding gates, information desks, and boutiques for international travelers, the true magic of Osanbashi happens on the upper deck. The expansive wooden walkway is a favorite spot for locals and photographers seeking the “Diamond View” of Yokohama. From here, you can enjoy an unobstructed, 360-degree panorama that encompasses the “Three Towers of Yokohama” (the King, Queen, and Jack) and the futuristic Minato Mirai skyline. Whether you’re watching a massive luxury liner dock or catching the sunset over the harbor, the pier offers a sense of open-air serenity that is rare in such a bustling port city.
