The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (東京都現代美術館), commonly referred to as MOT, is Japan’s largest institution dedicated exclusively to modern and contemporary art. Located in the expansive greenery of Kiba Park in Koto Ward, the museum opened in 1995 and serves as a vital anchor for the city’s east-side cultural scene. Following a comprehensive three-year renovation completed in 2019, the museum reopened with modernized facilities, improved accessibility, and a mission to make challenging contemporary works more approachable for the general public.

The architecture itself, designed by Takahiko Yanagisawa, is a monumental feat of steel, glass, and granite. The vast interior spaces are designed to accommodate large-scale installations that would be impossible to house in smaller galleries. The museum is cleverly divided into two main sections: three floors are dedicated to high-profile temporary exhibitions that often feature world-renowned international artists, while two floors are reserved for the “MOT Collection.” This permanent archive consists of over 5,500 works, offering a chronological journey through the evolution of postwar Japanese art—from the experimental “Anti-Art” movements of the 1960s to the latest digital and multimedia innovations.

Beyond the galleries, MOT functions as a holistic creative hub. It houses one of the largest specialized art libraries in Japan, an “Art Library for Children,” and the stylish “Sandwichari” cafe. The museum’s location within Kiba Park allows for a unique “lull” where visitors can transition seamlessly from the cerebral experience of the galleries to the natural landscape outside. Whether you are interested in the historical foundations of Japanese modernism or the provocative edge of the global avant-garde, MOT remains an essential cornerstone of Tokyo’s artistic identity.
