Kaikaro Teahouse
Kaikaro (懐華樓) is the largest and arguably most prestigious teahouse in Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya District. Boasting over 200 years of history, this beautifully preserved structure serves as a bridge to the Edo period’s sophisticated “willow and flower” world. While many historic buildings in the district have been converted into shops, Kaikaro remains an active ochaya, hosting exclusive geisha banquets by night while opening its doors as a public museum and café by day.
Inside, the aesthetics are breathtaking, featuring a striking vermilion-colored staircase and a contemporary gold-leaf tatami room—a nod to Kanazawa’s status as Japan’s gold-leaf capital. The admission fee includes a tea service, allowing visitors to sit in the historic rooms and enjoy matcha accompanied by traditional wagashi (Japanese sweets). From the delicate lattice work to the hidden courtyards, Kaikaro offers a rare, tactile look at the opulent atmosphere that once defined Kanazawa’s high-society entertainment.
