Winter Wonder Festival, or WonFes, is a semi-annual event, serving as the world’s largest exhibition for “garage kits”—limited-edition resin models of characters from anime, manga, and video games. Organized by Kaiyodo, the event features a vast spectrum of work from both professional manufacturers and amateur sculptors. A defining feature of the festival is the “one-day copyright” system, where intellectual property holders grant creators a temporary license to sell fan-made replicas of copyrighted characters exclusively within the venue for the duration of the event. This unique legal framework fosters a marketplace for highly detailed, non-mass-produced items that are prized by collectors for their craftsmanship and rarity.

For visitors, entry typically requires the purchase of an official Guidebook, which functions as the admission ticket. To access limited-edition releases from popular independent circles, obtaining a “Priority Entry Ticket” via an advanced lottery is often necessary, as the standard admission queue can be exceptionally long. Most amateur tables operate on a cash-only basis, so bringing sufficient Japanese yen is essential. Given the vast scale of the exhibition halls, attendees are encouraged to study the floor map in the Guidebook beforehand to navigate the hundreds of booths efficiently. Wearing comfortable footwear is also recommended, as the event requires significant walking across multiple halls.
