The Jiyugaoka Megami Matsuri, or Goddess Festival, is a major food and culture event that has been running since 1973 and attracts over 500,000 visitors annually. Held typically over the two-day Sports Day holiday weekend in October, the festival is named after the bronze “Megami” (Goddess) statue located at the north exit of Jiyugaoka Station. The event features a diverse range of activities, including live concerts and performances by Japanese singers and celebrities on a large main stage constructed directly in front of the station.
Numerous stalls operated by local restaurants and boutiques line the streets both north and south of the station, offering a variety of international and local cuisine. Visitors should note that Jiyugaoka’s narrow streets become exceptionally crowded during the festival; using public transportation is highly recommended as local roads are closed to vehicular traffic. To secure a viewing spot for the main stage performances, it is advisable to check the daily schedule and arrive early, as the station-front area reaches capacity quickly. The festival is characterized by its sophisticated atmosphere, reflecting the district’s reputation as a center for fashion and confectionery.
