The Bunkyo Plum Festival, or Ume Matsuri, is held annually at Yushima Tenmangu Shrine, a site historically significant for its association with Sugawara no Michizane, the patron deity of learning. The shrine grounds feature approximately 300 plum trees, with the white Shirokaga variety comprising about 80% of the grove. As the blossoms typically peak between February and early March, the festival attracts over 400,000 visitors who come to view the floral displays and participate in the shrine’s seasonal traditions. Numerous stalls are established within the precinct, offering various plum-themed products, traditional snacks, and local crafts. The festival remains open daily from 8:00 to 19:30, with evening illuminations extending the viewing hours after sundown.
For visitors, the weekends offer the most activity, often featuring nodate (outdoor tea ceremonies) and kagura (Shinto theatrical dance) performances. However, these times also coincide with the highest crowd densities. Because the shrine is a primary destination for students praying for academic success, the thousands of ema (votive tablets) hanging near the main hall provide a unique cultural insight into the season. To avoid the heaviest congestion, visiting on a weekday morning is recommended. The shrine is conveniently located a short walk from Yushima Station on the Chiyoda Line or Ueno-okachimachi Station on the Oedo Line, making it an easy addition to an itinerary involving the nearby Ueno Park district.
