The Akita Kanto Matsuri (秋田竿燈まつり) is an annual festival to pray for a good harvest known for the 8-meter tall bamboo poles decorated with hanging lanterns (kanto means “a pole with lanterns” which are supposed to represent sacks of rice). 230 of these bamboo poles—each with 24 or 46 lanterns attached—are lifted up at the same time, each one carried on the neck, shoulders, and hips of just one person!
