The Eisei-Bunko Museum (永青文庫) is a prestigious private archive located in the Mejirodai neighborhood of Bunkyo. It houses the extraordinary collection of the Hosokawa clan, the powerful feudal lords who ruled the Kumamoto domain in Kyushu for centuries. With a lineage stretching back over 700 years to the Nanboku-cho period, the family has maintained an unbroken chain of preservation, amassing a staggering archive of approximately 112,000 items, including eight National Treasures and dozens of Important Cultural Properties.

The museum building itself is a handsome, Western-style structure built in 1936 that formerly served as the Hosokawa family’s administrative office. This setting provides a scholarly, historical “lull” perched in the hills overlooking the city. Because the collection is so vast, exhibits are rotated four times per year to showcase different facets of the family’s heritage, ranging from fearsome samurai weaponry and armor to delicate Zen calligraphy and Noh masks. The archive is also notable for its collection of modern Nihonga paintings and Chinese ceramics, reflecting the eclectic aesthetic tastes of the 16th-generation head, Moritatsu Hosokawa. A visit is best paired with a stroll through the adjacent Higo-Hosokawa Garden, which once served as part of the family’s suburban residence and offers a tranquil landscape of ponds and seasonal blooms.
