SUMMARY:Nachi Fire Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Nachi Fire Festival (那智の扇祭り\, Nachi no Ogi Matsuri)\, officially known as the “Nachi Fan Festival\,” is one of Japan’s “Three Great Fire Festivals” and a cornerstone of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage tradition. Held annually on July 14 at Kumano Nachi Taisha in Wakayama Prefecture\, the event commemorates the symbolic return of the 12 Kumano deities to their original home at the Nachi Waterfall. Standing at 133 meters\, this waterfall is not just a landmark but is revered as a living deity. The festival serves as a profound purification ritual\, intended to “refresh” the spiritual power of the gods and the natural world. \nThe most iconic scene involves 12 enormous pine torches\, each weighing approximately 50 kilograms\, being carried from the shrine down to the waterfall. These torches represent the 12 deities and are used to physically and spiritually “purify” the path for the Ogi-mikoshi (Fan Mikoshi). These 12 portable shrines are six meters tall and intricately decorated with ogi fans and mirrors\, designed to mirror the shimmering appearance of the waterfall itself. When the flames meet the shrines\, the intense heat is said to burn away the impurities of the past year and revitalize the region’s spiritual energy. \nVisitors can reach the festival via a 30-minute bus ride from JR Kii-Katsuura Station to the Nachi-no-taki-mae stop. Viewing areas along the narrow stone stairways and at the base of the falls are extremely restricted; it is highly recommended to arrive at the shrine grounds before 10:00 AM to secure a position for the early afternoon rituals. While the fire procession is the main draw\, the Nachi no Dengaku (sacred music and dance) performed at the shrine is a designated UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and offers a quieter look at the site’s deep religious history. Due to the proximity of the massive torches\, spectators should be prepared for significant heat and falling ash near the procession path.
